Sunday Reading: TORMAG Fan Magazine

TORMAG September, 2011Last night while browsing through my #SWTOR list on twitter I saw an announcement that issue #2 of TORMAG was out and clicked through, expecting to see a blog ‘zine.

What I saw instead is a very impressive fan publication. The 25-page PDF is designed like a gaming magazine, making liberal use of images and serving up a cover story on Korriban, the ancient birthplace of the Sith empire. Other articles include an overview of companions (including a great screenshot of a smuggler and his wookie companion), interviews with a couple of SWTOR guild leaders, bounty hunter and trooper class spotlights, and a multi-page comic, The Jedi Gambit.

I love that Star Wars: The Old Republic, even without a release date, is inspiring fan created content of this caliber. Keep up the great work!

BETA Weekends Incoming!

Lord Vader Sparring with a fledgling Jedi KnightPardon my absence, but I had very important business to attend to — Wrenz and I were the entire Empire cheering section at a recent Jedi Training Academy at Disneyland. See above for the photographic evidence of Lord Vader giving a fledgling knight a little light saber action.

I was psyched to see @Rockjaw‘s announcement on twitter that BETA weekend invites were going out today, and suffered the crush of disappointment upon not finding one in my mailbox. I shall be crossing my fingers that other Mac Bootcamp users will be in there and testing and documenting any difficulties we may have once the game launches…

And to all of you who got in to play this weekend, I am both happy for you and incredibly jealous. And I can’t wait to hear about it!

Thanks to being on vacation and mostly offline for a week, then catching up with work, I’ve fallen behind in my Star Wars the Old Republic news, but here are some of my recent favorites news bits…

  • The Eternity Vault Developer Walkthrough released late last week gave a good idea of what the raiding game play will feel like. And I have to say, I liked what I saw. Especially those adorable little heal bots flitting about healing players. So adorable! And have I mentioned recently just how anxious I am to be shooting out purpley lightning?
  • Darth Hater is hosting a live Q&A tomorrow night. Great opportunity to pick the team’s brains about what they learned and played at PAX. Oh yeah– and they also filmed the final day’s PAX SWTOR panel.
  • Ask a Jedi had a nice post on how the item modification system will allow RPers and other stylish players to retain the looks they want without sacrificing the power their character level allows.

P.S. This one’s an oldie but goodie (and watching it this weekend made me even more impatient to get started playing):

Eternity Vault demo, Guild Testing, and Changes to Cross-Server Chat

Lots of interesting news tidbits over the last 24 hours or so…still no release date, mind you, but at least we have “several months of BETA weekends” to possibly look forward to…

  • The BiowareTV archive from yesterday’s Gamescom coverage has a brief live demo of the Eternity Vault raid. I can’t wait to be dishing out my own force lightning against sentry robots…
  • Also announced yesterday (though via the forums), guild testing is coming soon. And if you are looking for some assistance in finding a guid that’s the right fit for you, I’ve got just the post you need.
  • Devs clarified around a recent change to the ability to talk cross-faction — i.e. players may no longer talk cross-faction in the server’s general chat settings. Devs noted the made the change after seeing the griefing behavior too many of us have gotten to know and loathe in other MMOs, devs said “putting the onus on the user (“you can just /ignore them”) is not our idea of a quality game experience. “

Recent SWTOR Reads: Class Identity, Morality Gear, and AH Theorycrafting

Here are a few interesting SWTOR blog posts I’ve come across over the last few days:

  • [SWTOR] Let’s talk about class, and role, and faction, and morality, and story over on Spinksville shares thoughts on what type of story may result from which of the various classes you choose to play.
  • Darth Hater’s post on Morality Gear is a nice piece of theorycrafting around the pros and cons of a gearing system wherein your alignment affects the pieces of gear available to you, and how that might affect players’ game play and choices.
  • Coffers of Credits: Release Day Edition on Battle Meditation is good reading for the budding auctioneer, giving a high level once over for starting day auction house strategy. For those of us who’ve been playing the virtual AH game for years it may seem a little basic, but it is definitely a good primer for anyone who has had tendency to be eternally MMObroke.

SWTOR at Gamescom

In just a few short days, we’ll start to see some more Star Wars: the Old Republic news thanks to EA and Bioware attending Gamescom. Per the SWTOR community site, in addition to the starting area game play that has been previously available, they will be showcasing “demonstrations of a small portion of the Eternity Vault, a high-level Operation or raid.”

I’m probably most looking forward to hearing the feedback from the SWTOR community members who applied to test out the Alderaan player-vs-player Warzone. Like many of my gaming buddies, I’ve spent a good amount of time in the past PvPing, and can’t wait to get a sneak peek of what it will look like in SWTOR. Hopefully, that will be some of the content included in the BiowareTV feed.

Gamescom Showfloor Hours:

  • Thursday, August 18th: 10:00AM – 8:00PM CEST
  • Friday, August 19th: 10:00AM – 8:00PM CEST
  • Saturday, August 20th: 9:00AM – 8:00PM CEST
  • Sunday, August 21st: 9:00AM – 6:00PM CEST

NOTE: CEST is 9 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), so the action will be happening during night owl hours for us West Coast folks.

How to Find Your SWTOR Guild

Tags

, , ,

guild screenEditor’s NOTE: This post is from August 2011 and thus is outdated, as the Official Community site’s guild forums closed down in mid January. Stay tuned for an updated set of resources!

Even though Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) lacks a publicly known release date, folks are already starting to feel like they want to get the age-old top MMO to-do item out-of-the-way: finding the guild they’ll start the game with.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a solid group of MMO-playing friends who are planning to start a SWTOR guild, there are still a number of ways to find a guild.

Start with the Official Community Site

As of this morning, the official community site’s guild search utility found over 30,000 results when searching for an Empire guild, and over 24,000 Republic guilds. The tool allows you to search by affiliation (Republic or Empire), or by primary activity focus (PvP, PvE, RP.) Many guilds already have some public forum chit chat going, which gives you a taste for what their culture may be like. Other have already started recruitment threads in the Guild Hall forum to give prospective applicants a better idea of what they’re looking for.

Once you find a guild that look appealing, just hit the “Apply to this guild” button, and you’re set. Now your guild homepage will show that you’ve applied to the guild. Should you have clickers remorse you can easily hit the “withdraw your application” button, and start over again. Kudos for EA/bioware for allowing the guild formation process to start ahead of the live date.

My only complaint (and it’s a small one) is that the guild application process is not customized. There is a big “apply” button on each guild’s primary page, and hitting it submits your application to the guild owner for approval, but there isn’t a formal application or any way to tell your potential guild anything about yourself. [NOTE: as Guld notes in the comments, in your account settings you can fill out what amounts to an application resume that is submitted to prospective guilds when you hit the “apply” button.]

Check out Fan Sites and Gaming Publications

Another way to find a guild is by checking out the many SWTOR community sites, and the gaming publications that are already covering the game. Many of these sites have some sort of guild classified or guild recruitment forums you can browse. Just a few of the ones I’ve seen include:

Put Your Social Networks to Work

Probably the best way to find a guild of like-minded people is simply to put it out there in your social media channels of choice that you are excited about playing SWTOR and see who responds.

Another easy way to get a pulse on interesting people you might want to be guilded with is to follow the #SWTOR tag on twitter, tumblr, or other social networks. In addition to a steady stream of news and blog post links, you are likely to see a number of guild promos as well.

If you have other ideas or resources for finding SWTOR guilds, let me know in the comments.

Why Sith Inquisitor? Must You Ask?

It was a long and treacherous path I traveled to make the decision that I should play a Sith Inquisitor…Oh, wait, no, actually, this video pretty much confirmed that this is precisely the path I must travel:

  • Purpley lightning
  • Ability to poof in a puff of purpleyness
  • Scaring my enemies into cowering submission in an AOE fashion
  • A shiny magic force field to protect me from my enemies’ attacks
  • The ability to restore force through damaging my enemies
  • Ability to summon the unbreakable will of the Sith, immediately freeing myself from any inconvenient and tiresome situations

Ah yes, clearly, this is my calling. After all, I have spent the bulk of my recent years playing a purpley, shadowy, evil vixen.

Mwahahahahaha.

Pleasantly, the Jedi Consular class video came out on Friday, so perhaps the game world won’t be *too* overrun with inquisitors…

Well, Hello There…

Greetings and Salutations–

If you are reading this, chances are I know you from twitter or from Bible of Dreams, my World of Warcraft blog.

As a writer and a long-time gamer, including a 5 1/2 year stint with the World of Warcraft, blogging now goes hand-in-hand with gaming for me.

Once the game launches and my exploration of the world begins, expect to see musings about the leveling process, screenshots galore, and all manner of bucket lists. Until then, I’ll be sharing Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) news, resources, and chatter.

So pull up a chair and stay awhile, and enjoy some roadhouse hospitality.

cheers,

Anexxia
